R. Stevie Moore

Daar is dit blog trouwens naar vernoemd. Een van mijn leukste ontdekkingen dit jaar, terwijl de man al sinds de jaren ’60 muziek maakt. Lees op Allmusic meer; “One of the most difficult to categorize musicians in rock, R. Stevie Moore is a true original. Bypassing the traditional recording industry more thoroughly than just about any internationally known singer/songwriter ever has, Moore has self-released literally thousands of songs through The R. Stevie Moore Cassette Club (now online at www.rsteviemoore.com), an ongoing mail-order operation which has hundreds of individually dubbed cassettes and CD-Rs in its catalog.” Bezoek die site voor de grap eens. Waarschijnlijk is die het best te vergelijken met een digitaal doolhof waar je best een uurtje rond kan dolen.

Ariel Pink, die ook in mijn vorige blogpost aan bod kwam, noemt Moore een grote invloed. In Wire (juli 2009) zegt hij: “He’s just doing therapy, I’m sure. He has to record. It’s like his Achilles heel. But for me as somebody who gets to listen to his life in fast-forward, essentially, it’s fascinating to me. You’d think there would be hundreds, if not thousands of guys like R. Stevie Moore. On paper he’s just a one-man recording guy who records at home. He’s been doing it forever, though. He started in the late 60s when he was a teenager, and he continued to do it and managed to not play live, and hence not really have a career. But it obviously doesn’t bother him, because he’s perfectly happy doing it was he does it, and that’s all the more respectable and commendable. I think he’s a bright, shining example of somebody that is completely pure in their intentions.” Ariel Pink heeft trouwens net getekend bij 4AD. Erg benieuwd naar hoe zijn volgende plaat gaat worden.

De discografie van R. Stevie Moore is een ongelooflijke lijst. Als je benieuwd bent naar zijn muziek, zou ik Glad Music of Contact Risk (hoe kan het ook anders) aanraden om mee te beginnen.
