New Transparent release: Weekend / Young Prisms

The latest release by recordlabel/bloggers Transparent is a split 7" by Weekend and Young Prisms. Weekend released a 10" on Mexican Summer earlier (also known from releases by Washed Out and Pearl Harbour). I really liked their song All-American, sounding somewhere near My Bloody Valentine and Japandroids, only with added vacuum cleaner. That's right: even more vacuum cleaner, but still creating great melodies. Their song from the Transparent 7", End Times, can be considered just as genius. This time they sound a bit more New Wave, thanks to the added edgy bassline. Unbelievably, they manage to create a larger-than-life chorus within their shoegaze-sound, going straight through the heart.

Young Prisms' side of the 7" is just as great as their San Francisco friends. Leaning heavily on layers of vocals and guitars with loads of reverb, their song I Don't Get Much sounds dreamy from start to finish.

Vehicle Blues - Changer

Business is going pretty well for Bridgetown Records, so it seems. This week sees the release of their first “pro-manufactured” release: Changer by Vehicle Blues. The band creates beautiful nostalgic shoegaze and garagepop songs, describing the move from Kansas to Chicago in the winter of 2008. The same-titled song really is promising. Although the album was recorded at home, the band sounds overpowering and ambitious, with anthems that get lodged in your head after listening. Vehicle Blues fits perfectly amongst bands like No Age, Gauntlet Hair and Best Coast, which of course have been creating a lot of attention lately. Next up is Vehicle Blues.

Small Black - Bad Lover

Vorige maand gaf Jagjaguwar de debuut-EP van Small Black opnieuw uit. Ryan Heyner en Josh Kolenik namen de plaat op op de zolderkamer van hun oom Matt (die eerder te zien was in de fantastische clip voor Despicable Dogs). Nu is er de vrij vervreemdende clip voor Bad Lover:

Cloud Nothings

Cloud Nothings is The Thermals in het kwadraat. Waar The Thermals de laatste albums toch steeds netter zijn gaan klinken, doet Cloud Nothings nog een stapje terug ten opzichte van het debuut van die andere. Heel lo-fi opgenomen popliedjes met enorm veel hooks en melodieuze zang- en gitaarpartijen. Frontman en songschrijver is ene Dylan uit Cleveland, slechts 18 jaar. Als hij nu al zulke catchy nummers schrijft ben ik benieuwd naar de toekomst.

Twin Sister - Lady Daydream (video)

De nieuwe clip van Twin Sister, even dromerig als het nummer zelf. Eigenlijk hoeft het helemaal niet zo moeilijk te zijn: wat uit de hand geschoten beelden van een zomerse dag op het strand en uit het reuzenrad/achtbaan. Heel mooi. De beelden vatten de sfeer van het nummer in ieder geval goed samen:

Gauntlet Hair - I Was Thinking (official video)

Onlangs postte ik dit nummer al, inclusief fanvideo. Gister kwam de officiële clip uit. lekker DIY, met een glansrol voor de hond van de band. De clip werd geregiseerd door Caitlin McNichols. het wachten is nu nog op de pre-order bij Forest Family Records.

Land of Talk - Some Are Lakes

Deze video kwam ik net tegen bij Yours Truly (die overigens heel veel mooie sessies filmen, zeker de moeite waard om eens op de site rond te kijken). Naar dit nummer heb ik echt heel veel geluisterd toen hun album uit kwam. Ik was er vooral benieuwd naar omdat Justin Vernon (Bon Iver) de plaat produceerde, maar kreeg wat anders dan verwacht. Losjes gespeelde, haast slordige liedjes met lieve, lome zang van Lizie Powell. Hier de clip:

How To Dress Well

How To Dress Well is het alter ego van Tom Krell uit Keulen. Overdag werkt hij als vertaler van een "post-Kantiaans filosofisch boek" (zo leert een artikel op Pitchfork althans), 's-avonds maakt hij muziek die een combinatie is tussen de falset van Bon Iver, de uitgesponnen dromerige pop van jj en Memory Tapes en R&B. Krell is behoorlijk fan van Kanye West, wat je indirect ook wel terughoort in zijn muziek. "With each album, I was more and more convinced Kanye is a really serious artist. But I don't want How to Dress Well to be about me in the way that Kanye wants it to be about Kanye. For Kanye, music is a vehicle for personality and self-expression. But music allows me to depersonalize. It's a lot more about sound design than my personality. Kanye is really self-advancing. That's not what How to Dress Well is about-- it's more about delivering a feeling."

Best of La Blogotheque (9): Micah P. Hinson - She Don't Own Me

Micah P. Hinson groeide op in een sterk christelijk huishouden, maar voor zijn twintigste kreeg hij het toch al voor elkaar om in de gevangenis te belanden, verslaafd aan drugs en failliet te raken. Hij heeft er werk van gemaakt. Tegenwoordig vindt hij zijn toevlucht vooral in het maken van muziek, en reist hij wat rond. Vooral zijn eerste drie platen zijn erg goed, en klinken als de volgende schakel in de traditie Woody Guthrie/Bob Dylan. Ook de twee nummers uit deze Blogotheque sessie komen van die eerste platen:
